Lean manufacturing refers to the pursuit of maximizing efficiency and profitability for a company by eliminating any wasteful practices or activities. It’s a method that streamlines production processes to achieve maximum value while reducing waste.

Many companies may initially feel intimidated by the concept of lean manufacturing, but it is actually quite straightforward. All it takes is a dedicated and disciplined approach to making changes and eliminating inefficiencies.

There are seven main areas that are commonly identified as sources of waste in production processes: overproduction, transportation, motion, inventory, processing, waiting time, and defects. Addressing these areas can help prevent production delays, high costs, and even bankruptcy.

For example, by addressing defects at their root cause, a company can eliminate the need for time-consuming and costly correction processes.

To fully understand lean manufacturing, it’s helpful to familiarize oneself with some key technical terms associated with the method, including:

Cellular Manufacturing

A combination of manual and machine operations that are linked to achieving maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness while reducing waste. Cellular manufacturing usually follows a U-shaped design and adheres to one continuous flow pattern.

Kanban System

A pull method that uses color-coded cards attached to parts to ensure a smooth production flow. The customer’s needs are prioritized over the manufacturer’s dictation.

Value: This represents the customer’s perception of the worth of a product or service, as well as their willingness to pay. The aim of lean manufacturing is to deliver exactly what the customer wants.

Pull System

A system that replaces only goods that have been depleted or used up.

Takt Time

This is set by the customer’s demand rate. Takt time determines the pace of production and ensures that it matches the customer’s needs. Often dubbed the “pulse” of lean manufacturing systems, this concept is vital to their success.
